Amharic text to speech that reads Fidel the way Ethiopians do
Amharic is the working language of the Ethiopian federal government and the second most spoken Semitic language on earth after Arabic, with more than 57 million speakers. It is written in Fidel, the Ge’ez abugida — one of the few writing systems indigenous to Africa — in which each character stands for a whole consonant-plus-vowel syllable, arranged in seven vowel orders across some 250 forms. There is no Latin fallback that captures it, so a serious Amharic voice has to model the script’s syllabic logic directly.
Notevibes generates Amharic in am-ET with neural voices tuned to the sounds Fidel encodes. Like Georgian and other Ethiopian Semitic languages, Amharic uses ejective consonants — p’, t’, s’, and q’ made with a glottal burst — that contrast with their plain counterparts and change meaning. It also relies on an epenthetic vowel to break up consonant clusters, so the rhythm of natural Amharic is quite specific and easy to get wrong.
The gemination the script doesn’t show
The hardest part of Amharic TTS isn’t the alphabet — it’s what the alphabet leaves out. Consonant gemination, where a doubled consonant is held longer, is meaningful in Amharic but is not marked in Fidel at all. The same written word can be two different words depending on which consonant is long, and only context tells them apart. A model that reads Amharic well infers that length from the surrounding words rather than flattening every consonant to a single beat.
