Nepali is the official language of Nepal and the mother tongue or lingua franca of more than 32 million people across Nepal, Bhutan, and the neighbouring hill regions of India. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan family and shares much of its vocabulary and its Devanagari script with Hindi and Sanskrit, though its grammar and everyday words are distinctly its own.
