Estonian has a feature that quietly defeats most TTS: a three-way length distinction. A vowel or consonant can be short, long, or overlong, and the difference is not cosmetic — it separates one word from another. Worse for a machine, the overlong degree is not shown in spelling, so “linna” written one way can be two different words depending on a length the letters never reveal. For the roughly 1.1 million speakers in Estonia, a voice that misses this reads as plainly wrong.
