Igbo is the language of south-eastern Nigeria and one of the country's three major languages, alongside Hausa and Yoruba. About 30 million people speak it, in Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi states and in parts of neighbouring states, as well as in a large diaspora in Lagos, the United Kingdom and North America. It belongs to the Niger–Congo family, and its literature runs from early mission publishing to modern novels, poetry and plays.
For audio, Igbo is a language where small details carry meaning. Two words spelled identically can differ only in the pitch of a syllable, and a single vowel choice has to agree with the rest of the word. A voice that ignores those patterns may be understandable, but it will never sound like someone from Enugu or Owerri.
Dotted vowels, paired consonants and two tones
Igbo is written in a Latin alphabet adapted to its sounds. The dotted vowels ị, ọ and ụ sit alongside i, o and u, and consonant pairs such as gb, kp, gw, kw and nw each represent a single sound. The labial-velar stops gb and kp, pronounced with the lips and the back of the tongue at once, are characteristic of the region and easy for a foreign voice to flatten.
The language has eight vowels that divide into two harmony sets, so the vowels within a word tend to come from one set or the other. It is also tonal, with high and low tones and a downstep that lowers a following high tone. Tone marks appear in dictionaries and teaching material but are usually left out of everyday writing, which means a speaker, or a voice, must supply the melody from context.
One standard, many home varieties
Igbo has a great deal of regional variation. To give the written language a shared form, a Standard Igbo, Igbo Izugbe, was developed during the twentieth century and is now taught in schools and used in broadcasting and publishing. It draws on the varieties of the Owerri and Onitsha areas, which remain widely heard, while many speakers use their own local form at home.
Igbo appears on radio and television across the south-east, in Nollywood films and in a lively music scene, and there has been a sustained push to keep it strong among younger speakers and the diaspora.
