Luganda is the language of Buganda, the historic kingdom at the heart of Uganda, and of Kampala, the capital that grew inside it. About 10 million people speak it as a first or second language, which makes it the most widely spoken language in Uganda after English. Long sounds, written twice
Luganda spelling is unusually faithful to length. Long vowels are written double, as in the aa of many words, and long consonants are written double too, as in kk, ss or bb. What the spelling does not show is tone. Luganda has high and low tones governed by intricate rules, and the pitch of a syllable can shift depending on what comes around it.
