The defining feature is a shift in the short front vowels. In New Zealand English the vowel in kit and fish has moved toward the centre of the mouth, which is why Australians joke that Kiwis say “fush and chups”. At the same time the vowels in dress and trap have risen, so to outside ears “bet” can sound close to “bit” and “bat” close to “bet”. Australians, meanwhile, push the kit vowel the other way, toward “feesh”, which is one reason a trained ear separates the accents instantly.

Other markers add up. The vowels of near and square have largely merged, so beer and bear can sound the same. The accent is non-rhotic in most of the country, and many speakers use a rising intonation on statements. Everyday speech is also full of te reo Māori, from place names such as Whangārei and Tauranga to words like kia ora and whānau, and a local voice needs to pronounce them properly.

General New Zealand English is the mainstream accent heard across the country and in national broadcasting, and it is the right default for most projects. In Southland and parts of Otago, some speakers keep a rhotic r, the so-called Southland burr, a legacy of Scottish settlement. Māori English, used by many Māori speakers, has its own rhythm, intonation, and vocabulary and is an important part of how the country sounds.

Local advertising and public campaigns are the obvious fit, because New Zealanders respond to voices that sound like them. Tourism, education, and government content benefit from a natural local accent, as do e-learning for New Zealand employers and audiobooks by New Zealand writers. Getting te reo Māori names right is often a requirement rather than a nicety.
