Sepedi, also called Northern Sotho or Sesotho sa Leboa, is a Sotho-Tswana Bantu language spoken by about 14 million people, counting first- and second-language speakers. Most of its speakers live in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, with large communities in Gauteng and Mpumalanga. It is one of South Africa’s official languages, taught in schools, used in provincial government and broadcast on its own public radio station. It has a written literature of novels, poetry and drama going back more than a century, and a strong oral tradition of praise poetry and storytelling.
