Sesotho, also known as Southern Sotho, is spoken by about 13 million people, counting first- and second-language speakers. It is the national language of Lesotho, where nearly the whole population speaks it and it is official alongside English, and it is one of South Africa’s official languages, strongest in the Free State and across Gauteng. It also has one of the oldest literary traditions in southern Africa: Thomas Mofolo’s novel Chaka, written in Sesotho and published in 1925, is counted among the landmarks of African literature.

Two orthographies, one language
Sesotho is written in the Latin alphabet, but Lesotho and South Africa standardised its spelling differently. Where South African spelling writes di before i and u, Lesotho spelling writes li, so the same word can appear as dintho or lintho. Lesotho spelling also uses o and oe in places where South African spelling uses u and w, which is why the founder of the Basotho nation appears as Moshoeshoe in one and Moshweshwe in the other. A voice has to pronounce both forms the same way.
Sesotho is a tonal Sotho-Tswana language, with high and low tones that are not marked in writing, and its sound system includes aspirated consonants, the lateral fricative hl and a click spelled q, found in words such as ho qala, to begin. Natural speech depends on getting tone right from context and keeping those consonants crisp without letting them dominate the sentence.
Lesotho and South Africa
