Slovak is a West Slavic language spoken by about 5.5 million people, most of them in Slovakia, and it sits so close to Czech that speakers of one largely understand the other. What sets it apart on the page is a dense system of diacritics: the mäkčeň that softens a consonant (č, š, ž, ľ, ď) and the dĺžeň that lengthens a vowel (á, é, í, ó, ú, ĺ, ŕ).
