A practical alphabet with one thing left unwritten
Somali has been written officially in a Latin alphabet since 1972, after decades in which Arabic script and the Osmanya alphabet were both in use. The spelling is consistent and phonetic. Long vowels are written double, x stands for a voiceless pharyngeal sound, c for its voiced counterpart, q for a uvular stop and dh for a retroflex consonant. A reader who knows these conventions can pronounce almost any word correctly.
What the spelling does not show is pitch accent. In Somali, where the high pitch falls can mark gender, number and case, so words that are spelled the same can differ only in where the voice rises; the textbook pair is ínan, boy, and inán, girl.
