Tajik text to speech: Persian, read from Cyrillic, with its own vowels
Tajik is the official language of Tajikistan and a variety of Persian, spoken by about 8 million people in Tajikistan and in the old Uzbek cities of Samarkand and Bukhara. It shares its classical literature with Iran and Afghanistan, from Rudaki to Hafez, and a Tajik speaker and a speaker from Tehran can follow each other with some effort. But a century of separate history has given Tajik its own vocabulary, its own pronunciation and, most visibly, its own alphabet.
Where Persian in Iran and Dari in Afghanistan use the Perso-Arabic script, Tajik has been written in Cyrillic since around 1940, after a brief Latin period. The Tajik alphabet adds letters Russian does not have, including ғ, ӣ, қ, ӯ, ҳ and ҷ, to represent Persian sounds. Six vowels and the sounds behind the extra letters
One of the clearest differences from Iranian Persian is in the vowels. Tajik has six: и, е, а, о, у and ӯ. The classical long ā became a rounded о in Tajik, so a word that sounds like “bād” in Tehran is closer to “bod” in Dushanbe. The letter ӯ marks a separate rounded vowel, and ӣ marks a stressed final i, often a grammatical ending.
The consonants carry Persian’s older distinctions: қ is a deep uvular sound kept apart from к, ғ is a voiced throaty consonant, ҳ is a breathy h, and ҷ is the j of “jam”. A voice that reads Tajik as if it were Russian flattens exactly these contrasts, and it also misplaces stress, which in Tajik usually falls near the end of the word. Getting them right is what makes the reading sound Tajik instead of a transliteration.

Tajik is the language of government, schooling and national broadcasting in Tajikistan, and it lives alongside Russian in business and among many city dwellers. Large numbers of Tajiks work abroad, especially in Russia, which gives Tajik-language audio a wide audience across borders.
