Thai is a tonal language with five distinct tones — mid, low, falling, high, and rising — spoken by around 60 million people in Thailand. In Thai the tone is not expression; it is meaning. The same syllable spoken on a different pitch contour is a different word, so tone accuracy is the first and hardest test any Thai TTS has to pass.
