Wolof text to speech built on length, not tone
Wolof is the language you hear first in Senegal. Only part of the population is ethnically Wolof, yet roughly four in five Senegalese speak it, and together with The Gambia and Mauritania it counts about 12 million speakers, many of them second-language users. It is an Atlantic language of the Niger–Congo family and one of Senegal's national languages, used in homes, markets, taxis, parliament debates and on almost every radio station in Dakar.
That makes Wolof the practical way to reach Senegalese listeners who follow news and entertainment by ear. French remains the main written language of administration, but spoken life happens in Wolof, and audio in Wolof sounds local in a way French audio cannot.
A West African language without tones
Many languages of the region are tonal. Wolof is not. Instead, much of its meaning depends on length: short and long vowels contrast, and so do single and doubled consonants, so a word with a held consonant can mean something different from the same word said quickly. Wolof also has prenasalised stops such as mb, nd and ng at the start of words, which a foreign voice tends to split into two sounds.
The official Latin orthography, set by the Senegalese state, writes vowel length with doubled letters and uses accents to distinguish vowel qualities, as in à, é and ë. Alongside it, the older Wolofal tradition writes Wolof in Arabic script, especially in religious poetry. Everyday online Wolof is often spelled more freely, in a French-influenced way, so a voice has to cope with inconsistent input.
