What is an audio limiter?
A limiter is a special compressor with a very high ratio that catches peaks above a fixed threshold. Anything above the threshold is held flat — no matter how loud the source, the output never exceeds the ceiling. Limiters are used to prevent clipping during recording, mastering, broadcast, and streaming.
How does this limiter work?
It uses the Web Audio DynamicsCompressor with threshold −1 dB, ratio 20:1, attack 1 ms, release 50 ms, and zero knee — a brick-wall configuration. Anything that would clip the digital ceiling is caught and held just below 0 dB.
When should I use a limiter?
Use a limiter on any audio you plan to upload to streaming, broadcast, or hand off as a master — including podcasts, audiobooks, music exports, voiceovers, and YouTube audio. It guarantees zero clipping.
Will it make my audio louder?
Slightly — only the peaks are pulled down, so the average level can come up without clipping. But this limiter is configured for safety, not loudness. If you need to make audio louder, run the Audio Volume Booster first, then this limiter.
Limiter vs. compressor — what's the difference?
A compressor reduces dynamic range smoothly across a range of levels. A limiter is an extreme compressor — it does almost nothing below the threshold but completely stops anything from going above it. Use compression for tone-shaping, limiting for peak safety.
Is the audio limiter free?
Yes. Completely free with no sign-up, no watermark, and no limits. Max file size is 200 MB.
Is my audio file uploaded to a server?
No. The limiter runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Your file never leaves your device.
What audio formats are supported?
MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, and AAC. Anything your browser can decode will load. Output is exported as a 192 kbps MP3.
Can I create audiobooks with Notevibes?
Yes. The AI audiobook generator turns your EPUB, Kindle, or PDF into a narrated audiobook with character detection, 550+ voices, and ACX-compliant volume normalization built in.
