How to Set Your MP3 as a Ringtone

Two-minute guides for iPhone and Android.

iPhone (via GarageBand)

  1. 1.Save the downloaded MP3 to the Files app on your iPhone.
  2. 2.Open GarageBand (free on the App Store) and create a new Audio Recorder project.
  3. 3.Tap the loop icon in the top right, choose the Files tab, and import your MP3.
  4. 4.Tap My Songs → long-press your project → Share → Ringtone. Name it and tap Export.
  5. 5.Go to Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and pick your new tone.

GarageBand handles the MP3-to-M4R conversion for you — no manual file renaming needed.

Android & Samsung

  2. 2.Open Files (or My Files on Samsung) and navigate to Downloads.
  3. 3.Long-press the MP3 and tap Set as ringtone (or the three-dot menu → Set as).
  4. 4.Choose Phone ringtone, Notification sound, or Alarm sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a ringtone online?

Drop your MP3 onto the ringtone maker above, tap a First/Middle/Last 30s preset (or drag the handles for a custom section), preview it, then click Download Ringtone MP3. No sign-up and nothing is uploaded — everything happens in your browser.

How do I set the MP3 as my iPhone ringtone?

iPhone needs the .m4r format for Settings → Sounds & Haptics. The easiest way: install GarageBand on your iPhone (free from the App Store), create a new Audio Recorder song, tap the loop icon and import your MP3 from the Files app, then share it as a Ringtone. GarageBand handles the MP3-to-M4R conversion automatically. On a computer, iTunes (Windows) or the Music app (macOS) can also convert MP3 to M4R and sync it to your phone.

How do I set it on Android?

Android accepts MP3 ringtones directly. Open your file manager, find the downloaded MP3, long-press it, and tap Set as ringtone (or Set as → Phone ringtone). You can also go to Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone → My Sounds and pick the file.

Does it work on Samsung Galaxy?

Yes — Samsung phones run Android and accept MP3 ringtones the same way. Open My Files, long-press your downloaded MP3, and choose Set as ringtone. You can use it for call tone, notifications, or alarm.

What's the max length for a ringtone?

30 seconds is the standard — iPhone ringtones are capped at 30 seconds in Settings. Android is more flexible and can play longer tones, but most people stick to around 30 seconds because the phone only rings that long anyway. Our tool nudges you toward 30 seconds but lets you trim longer if you want.

Why 30 seconds?

30 seconds is the iPhone default cap and a comfortable length for most incoming calls. You'll see a green checkmark when your selection is at or under 30 seconds, and an orange reminder if you go over — but it's just a hint, not a hard limit.

Is it free? Is there a watermark? Is my file uploaded?

Completely free with no watermark, no ads, and no sign-up. Your MP3 is processed locally in your browser using the Web Audio API — it never leaves your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or tracked.

What about the M4R format?

We output MP3, not M4R. Most phones — including all Android and Samsung devices — accept MP3 ringtones directly. iPhone requires M4R for Settings → Sounds & Haptics, but GarageBand on iPhone can import an MP3 and export it as a ringtone in one step, which is the standard workflow.
