Frequently Asked Questions

What is a de-esser?

A de-esser is an audio tool that reduces harsh sibilant sounds — the hissy 'S', 'T', 'Z' and 'Sh' consonants in vocals. It works by cutting a narrow band of frequencies around 5–8 kHz where sibilance lives, without affecting the rest of the high-end so the voice still sounds bright and natural.

How does this de-esser work?

It applies a peaking filter centered at 6 kHz with a Q of 4 and −6 dB of gain reduction. That narrow notch suppresses the sibilance band while leaving frequencies above and below it untouched, so vocals stay clear without sounding muffled or boxy.

When should I use a de-esser?

Whenever you hear harsh, hissy 'S' or 'T' sounds in a recording — common with close-mic'd vocals, podcasts, voiceovers, and audiobook narration. It is especially helpful after EQ boosts in the high-end, which tend to amplify sibilance.

Will it muffle my vocals?

No. The cut is narrow enough (Q = 4) that it only removes the harsh 6 kHz band. Brightness, presence, and air sit above and below that notch and pass through untouched. If you want a wider treble cut, use the Treble Boost tool with a negative gain instead.

Is the de-esser free?

Yes. Completely free with no sign-up, no watermark, no ads, and no limits on how many files you can process. Max file size is 200 MB.

Is my audio file uploaded to a server?

No. The de-esser runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Your file never leaves your device — nothing is uploaded, stored, or analyzed.

What audio formats are supported?

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, and AAC. Anything your browser can decode via the Web Audio API will load. The processed output is exported as a 192 kbps MP3.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. It runs on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on both desktop and mobile. Tap to upload, tap De-Ess & Download — the cleaned file is saved straight to your phone.
