What is a noise gate?
A noise gate is an audio tool that silences anything below a chosen volume threshold. It is used to kill background noise, room tone, hum, hiss, mic bleed, and breath sounds during gaps in speech or music.
How does this noise gate work?
It computes a moving 10 ms RMS window across your audio. Whenever the RMS falls below your chosen threshold, the gate closes and that section is silenced. The window prevents single low samples from punching holes in the middle of speech.
Which threshold should I choose?
−30 dB is aggressive — use it only when noise is loud (heavy hum, fan noise, strong room tone). −40 to −50 dB is the sweet spot for podcast and dialogue cleanup. −60 dB is gentle — for quiet environments where you want to preserve quiet breaths and tails.
Will it cut off the start or end of words?
If you set the threshold too high, yes. The gate is hard — it goes from open to closed instantly when RMS crosses the threshold, so quiet syllable starts can drop. Pick a lower (more negative) threshold if you hear chopping.
Noise gate vs. silence remover — what's the difference?
A silence remover deletes silent sections from the timeline (the file gets shorter). A noise gate replaces them with digital silence (the file stays the same length but background noise during gaps is muted).
Is the noise gate free?
Yes. Completely free with no sign-up, no watermark, and no limits. Max file size is 200 MB.
Is my audio file uploaded to a server?
No. The noise gate runs entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.
What audio formats are supported?
MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, and AAC. Anything your browser can decode will load. Output is exported as a 192 kbps MP3.
