Three steps to a Kindle audiobook
Kindle books use Amazon's proprietary format, so there's one extra step: you export your book as EPUB first. After that, the AI handles everything.
Export from Kindle
Use Amazon's "Download & Transfer via USB" or Calibre to get your Kindle book as an EPUB file. Works with DRM-free books.
Upload to Notevibes
Drop the EPUB into Notevibes. AI detects chapters, finds characters, and assigns a unique voice to each one.
Download Audiobook
Generate narration chapter by chapter. Download the full audiobook as MP3 files. Listen anywhere.
What you get
Why convert Kindle to audio?
You bought the book. You should be able to listen to it too. Here's why people turn their Kindle libraries into audiobooks.
- No audiobook available. Most Kindle books never get a professional audiobook edition. AI narration fills that gap in minutes.
- Listen while commuting. Turn drive time into book time. Your Kindle library becomes a podcast library.
- Accessibility. Make any Kindle book accessible to people with visual impairments, dyslexia, or reading fatigue.
- Multitask your reading. Cook, clean, exercise — keep "reading" while your hands and eyes are busy.
- Choose your narrator. Kindle's built-in TTS gives you one robotic voice. Notevibes gives you 550+ natural voices you actually want to listen to.
- Save money. An Audible audiobook costs $15-30. Converting a Kindle book you already own? A fraction of that.
Getting your Kindle book ready
Kindle books use Amazon's .azw or .kfx format. Notevibes accepts EPUB, so you need to export your book first. This only works with DRM-free books.
Option 1: Download from Amazon
- Go to amazon.com/myk (Manage Your Content and Devices)
- Find your book and click the ... menu
- Select "Download & Transfer via USB"
- You'll get a .azw3 file — convert it to EPUB using Calibre (free, open source)
Option 2: Use Calibre directly
- Download Calibre from calibre-ebook.com (free for Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Connect your Kindle via USB or import the .azw3 file
- Right-click the book → Convert books → choose EPUB as output
- Upload the EPUB to Notevibes

57 languages
English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, and 49 more.
Multi-voice books
AI detects dialogue and characters. Assign a different voice to each character automatically.
Kindle TTS vs Notevibes
Kindle has a built-in "Read Aloud" feature. It works in a pinch. But if you want something you'd actually enjoy listening to, here's how they compare.
| Feature | Kindle TTS | Notevibes |
|---|---|---|
| Voice quality | Basic / robotic | Neural AI — natural & expressive |
| Voice options | 1 voice | 550+ voices |
| Character voices | ||
| Download audio | ||
| Languages | Limited | 57 languages |
| Speed control | Basic (3 speeds) | Fine-grained (0.25x - 4x) |
| Offline listening | On-device only | Download MP3 — any device |
| Emotion & tone |
Kindle TTS is fine for a quick skim. For actually enjoying a book — with natural voices, character detection, and a downloadable MP3 you can play anywhere — Notevibes is the upgrade.

Questions?
How do I convert a Kindle book to audio?
Export your Kindle book as EPUB using Amazon's "Download & Transfer via USB" option or Calibre. Upload the EPUB to notevibes.com/audiobook-narration. The AI detects chapters and characters, assigns voices, and generates your audiobook. Download as MP3.
Can I convert DRM-protected Kindle books?
No. Only DRM-free Kindle books can be exported and converted to audio. DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a publisher restriction. Many indie and self-published Kindle books are DRM-free. Check the book details on Amazon for DRM status.
Is it legal to convert my Kindle book to an audiobook?
Converting DRM-free ebooks you own for personal use is generally permitted. You should not distribute or sell audiobooks made from copyrighted works you don't hold rights to. Always check the ebook's license terms.
What format does my Kindle book need to be in?
Notevibes accepts EPUB files. Kindle books come in .azw, .azw3, or .kfx format — you need to convert them to EPUB first using Calibre (free). Our Kindle to EPUB guide walks you through the process.
How long does conversion take?
A typical novel (60,000-80,000 words) takes 10-20 minutes to generate. Shorter books and individual chapters are ready in under a minute. You can preview chapters before generating the full book.
Does the AI detect characters in my Kindle book?
Yes. Notevibes scans your book for dialogue tags and character names. It identifies who is speaking and lets you assign a unique voice to each character. You can review and adjust before generating.
How is this different from Kindle's built-in Read Aloud?
Kindle's TTS uses a basic robotic voice with no character detection, limited speed options, and no download. Notevibes offers 550+ natural AI voices, automatic character detection, 57 languages, fine-grained speed control, and downloadable MP3 files.
What audio quality do I get?
Audio is generated at high-quality MP3 (48kHz). Voices use neural TTS from Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and OpenAI — the same technology behind modern voice assistants. Much more natural than Kindle's built-in TTS.
Can I sell the audiobook I create from my own book?
If you own the rights to the book, yes. All paid plans include full commercial usage rights. Publish on Audible, Google Play Books, Apple Books, or your own website. No royalty splits to Notevibes.
What if my book is a PDF, not a Kindle file?
Notevibes also supports PDF to audio conversion. Upload your PDF at notevibes.com/pdf-to-audio. For best results, EPUB is preferred because it preserves chapter structure and clean text formatting.
