Understanding Kindle Formats
Amazon has used several proprietary ebook formats over the years. Here's what each one means and whether it can be converted.
AZW3 (KF8)
Amazon's current format. Based on HTML5 and CSS3 — similar foundation to EPUB. Supports rich formatting, embedded fonts, and complex layouts. This produces the best conversion results.
MOBI
Amazon's legacy format from the early Kindle era. Limited formatting support compared to AZW3. Still works but Amazon stopped accepting new MOBI uploads from publishers in 2022.
AZW
The original Kindle format — essentially MOBI with Amazon's DRM layer. Found on older Kindle devices. Can be converted if DRM-free.
KFX
Amazon's newest format used on recent Kindle devices and apps. Uses enhanced typesetting with advanced typography. Not currently supported by most converters including this tool.
For the best conversion results, use AZW3 files. They share the same HTML5 foundation as EPUB, so the conversion is nearly lossless. MOBI files convert well too, but may lose some formatting due to the older format's limitations.
Why convert Kindle to EPUB
Kindle files (AZW3, MOBI) only work on Amazon's devices and apps. EPUB is the universal ebook standard — it works on everything else.
- Read on Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, or any EPUB reader
- Share with friends or family who don't use Kindle
- Back up your library in an open, future-proof format
- Use with accessibility tools that support EPUB
- Convert to audiobook with AI narration
AZW3 vs MOBI vs EPUB
| Format | Devices | Quality | Open Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
AZW3 (KF8) Amazon's modern format | Kindle only | High (HTML5/CSS3) | Proprietary |
MOBI Legacy, being phased out | Kindle only | Basic | Proprietary |
EPUB Universal open standard | Everything except Kindle | High (HTML5/CSS3) |
AZW3 produces better EPUB conversions than MOBI because it uses the same HTML5/CSS3 foundation as EPUB. MOBI is an older format with limited formatting support.
About DRM & Kindle
DRM (Digital Rights Management) is copy protection that Amazon applies to most Kindle books. It locks the file to your Amazon account and prevents it from being opened outside the Kindle ecosystem. This is the single biggest barrier to Kindle-to-EPUB conversion.
When you “buy” a Kindle book, you're purchasing a license to read, not the file itself. Amazon retains the right to revoke access — this famously happened in 2009 when Amazon remotely deleted copies of George Orwell's 1984 from customer devices.
This converter only works with DRM-free files. If your Kindle book has DRM, you'll see an error. There are three ways to get DRM-free Kindle files:
- Books where the publisher opted out of DRM (some indie publishers do this)
- Personal documents you sent to your Kindle via email (these are always DRM-free)
- Amazon's new EPUB download feature for DRM-free titles (since January 2026)
Amazon's 2026 EPUB Downloads
Since January 20, 2026, Amazon lets you download DRM-free Kindle books as EPUB files directly.
If your Kindle book is DRM-free, you may not need this converter at all. Amazon now offers direct EPUB and PDF downloads from the “Manage Your Content and Devices” page. This is the simplest path — no conversion needed.
The catch: not all books are eligible. The publisher or author must have opted out of DRM. Books published after December 9, 2025 have an opt-in checkbox. Older books require the author to manually enable it. Kindle Unlimited titles are never eligible.

Tips for successful conversion
- Use AZW3 over MOBI when possible. AZW3 files use the same HTML5/CSS3 foundation as EPUB. The conversion is nearly lossless. MOBI is an older format with less formatting support.
- Check the output. Open the converted EPUB in Calibre or Apple Books and flip through the chapters. Most conversions are clean, but complex layouts (tables, sidebars, footnotes) may need minor formatting adjustments.
- Keep the original file. Always keep your original Kindle file as a backup. If the conversion isn't perfect, you still have the source.
- Personal documents convert best. Files you sent to your Kindle via email (personal documents) are always DRM-free and produce the cleanest conversions.
Alternatives to conversion
Converting Kindle files isn't always the best path. Here are other options depending on what you need.
If your book is DRM-free, download it as EPUB directly from Amazon — no conversion needed.
Buy the EPUB version
Many books are available as EPUB on Kobo, Google Play Books, or directly from the publisher. Some are even DRM-free.
Free public domain books
Project Gutenberg (60,000+ books), Standard Ebooks, and Open Library offer free, DRM-free EPUBs of classic literature.
Library apps
Libby and OverDrive let you borrow ebooks from your local library. Available as EPUB on most platforms.
If you want to listen rather than read, upload your Kindle file directly to Notevibes — it accepts AZW3 and MOBI natively.

Questions?
How do I convert Kindle to EPUB?
Upload your .azw3 or .mobi file using the converter at the top of this page. Conversion starts automatically and your EPUB downloads in seconds.
What Kindle formats are supported?
AZW3 (Kindle Format 8) and MOBI. These are the standard formats from Kindle devices and the Kindle app. KFX is not currently supported.
Can I convert DRM-protected Kindle books?
No. DRM-protected files cannot be converted. If your book is DRM-free, Amazon now lets you download it as EPUB directly from Manage Your Content and Devices (since January 2026).
Will the EPUB work on Apple Books?
Yes. The converter generates a standard EPUB 3.0 file that works on Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Calibre, and any other EPUB-compatible reader.
Are my files private?
Yes. Files are processed in memory and immediately discarded. Nothing is stored, logged, or shared. Your books stay private.
Is converting Kindle books legal?
Converting DRM-free Kindle files you own is legal. The files are your purchased content in a different format. This converter does not remove DRM — it only works with files that are already DRM-free.
Can I convert KFX files?
KFX files are not currently supported. KFX is Amazon's newest format with enhanced typesetting. For KFX books, check if Amazon offers a direct EPUB download via Manage Your Content and Devices.
What if conversion fails?
The most common cause is DRM protection — the converter cannot process DRM-locked files. Other causes: corrupted files, unsupported format variations, or files exceeding the 50MB limit. Try a different copy of the file, or check if the book is available as a direct EPUB download from Amazon.
Can I turn the EPUB into an audiobook?
Yes. After converting to EPUB, upload it to Notevibes to create a full audiobook with AI narration — 550+ voices, 57 languages, automatic character detection. Or skip the EPUB step entirely — Notevibes accepts Kindle files directly.
Your Kindle book. 550 voices. Minutes to audiobook.
